There's not much I can say about this novel at the moment, because I'm still in the process of reading it. Although it is not my usual practice to recommend books that I've not fully read, I'm willing to make an exception when a book's reputation has preceded it.
Shuggie Bain has won the enviable Booker Prize of 2020, and has been nominated for many other awards. It is a debut novel by the Scottish-American writer, Douglas Stuart.
I've read the first few chapters and can report that the narrative voice is distinct, the setting is vivid and the characters are lively. The novel promises to be a riveting portrayal of life in 1980s Glasgow, where one boy's fight for survival is played out for us to see.
Until next time.
